409 LETTERS also say that the first place in terms of science and subject must be assigned to your rule; and if you grant me the favour and permission to add to my treatise a brief dissertation, in which the substance of what has been privately discussed between us is contained, and in which the authority of your most respectable name is placed in your rule joined to mine for the common awareness of the professors, and your approval of the joining of these two rules, I say (and you see better than me) that the question is forever decided. May difficulties in general and qualms not be created for you by the fact that you are persuaded that harmony does not depend on the proportions, but on the perception of the ratios that there are between sounds. This is nothing in substance, because even if it is as you say, it is a fact that these sounds cannot be constituted if not in a ratio of harmonic proportion or series compared to the third sound; and yet it is a fact that your exponent being the same as the third sound, in that case the harmonic proportion and series is no longer separable from the rule, which therefore encompasses both your meaning and mine. Do not be surprised in particular at the direct way of intending musical things that there necessarily must be between you and me, because I can assure you on my honour that in substance we do converge. For example, you say that the augmented sixth understood by me as a consonance is the strongest dissonance in your rule. Please be good enough to observe what I say on page 162, where I claim to demonstrate its integral form to be otherwise (according to your rule); indeed according to my rule it is this other, in which due to the addition of Ffaut between Dlasolre and Gsolreut ♯ the form changes nature and appearance, and the effect which [three graphic music examples] I there demonstrate and explain extensively is excellent. One thing is that our musical institutions are lacking a sign to conveniently express in this case the Gsolreut ♯ (and I mention it): another thing is that the form is not as it is there clearly demonstrated. And it being so, it is certain that also in this quite unusual case we substantially agree, because your exponent and my third sound is Ffaut. You may therefore freely examine these two rules in their substance as much as you can: you will find them to be the same in substance, which is what I set myself to have you observe and consider.
