331 LETTERS is so bold and so remote from human feeling that a very strong and prudent spirit is needed to prevent its proposer from being deemed an outright madman. In such a case, I do not want to put Padre Riccati to such a test, 49 and without trying to flatter you, for the glory of God you are the only man known to me who can withstand such a trial. I have said everything. Martini Within the next week, the treatise mentioned, sealed and accompanied by a letter of mine, will be addressed there to the Most Illustrious Signor Dottor Balbi, to whom I convey my respects. It will surely arrive, as it will be brought by a Jesuit Father, a patron of mine, who is coming to this congregation. Meanwhile, I beg Your Reverence again to patiently assist in the examination of what is necessary with regard to music and to sound. I am informing Your Reverence, as I have informed the Most Illustrious Signor Dottor Balbi, that the experiments mentioned are not necessary. It shall be sufficient to me that, presuming them to be true, what remains in this supposition is found to be true, and this I write to both of you due to the confidence I have in you both. If my proposition is found to be true, in this case it is likely that I shall come there in person, and then it will be possible to repeat the experiments; of these the one concerning the third sound requires much frankness and practice, which one cannot hope to find in anyone else.
