317 LETTERS me this kind favour, spurring into action and urging whoever has it in Verona to forward it here. Signor Girolamo is returning there: a young man who, besides his excellent manners, has an extraordinary aptitude for the violin. He has done his duty, as I have made sure to do mine. But he came to my school too deficient for him to perfect himself in so little time. This is certain, that in a few months he has greatly improved, but he leaves my school precisely at the time when he is truly achieving. This is not a fault of mine, but I feel sorry both for him and for myself. My wish is to have proficient students, just as it is and always shall be that Your Most Illustrious Lordship is assured that I am, as with all my most respectful reverence I remain Your Most Illustrious Lordship’s most humble, devoted and obliged servant Giuseppe Tartini Padua, 8 June 1748 64. The damask sample was already received weeks ago; but the cavaliere was not in Padua then. Then when the cavaliere returned, I was not there, so I was later than I should have been. Now I am doing my duty, thanking Your Most Illustrious Lordship as much as I know and can for the favour done to me with such kindness, and I beg you to tell me the manner of reimbursing you of the 24 lira, the cost of the sample, and to take the trouble to command me to do whatever I am worthy of and able to reciprocate in some way (albeit never in proportion) for the many favours which I receive from Your Most Illustrious Lordship, to whom, submitting my most respectful regards, I remain as ever Your Most Illustrious Lordship’s most humble, devoted and obliged servant Giuseppe Tartini Padua, 18 July 1748
