Giuseppe Tartini - Lettere e documenti / Pisma in dokumenti / Letters and Documents - Volume / Knjiga / Volume II
305 LETTERS concertos and has the intention, after the opera seconda for solo violin and bass has been published, also to have printed those 12 concertos for many voices. I have the honour of informing you and advising you to ensure, if you wish to receive the print, that you enter into the contract with him: but it will be possible to stipulate the contract only at the conditions that, in faith, were granted to him a few years ago by signor Charles le Cene of Amsterdam when Monsieur Tartini had his first work for violin and bass printed, and also by the printer of Rome who is engraving the second work for violin and bass; that is to say, when Monsieur Tartini delivered the manuscript in Venice, he was immediately given 74 Venetian zecchini , the dedication to his gain, and once the work had been printed, he had 50 copies at his disposal; these were, without altering the truth, the conditions granted by the printers to Monsieur Tartini. We are now dealing with a manuscript, if you consider my offer, which can only go to your gain, given that the composition has a particular value of its own, and it is true that all those who love music are greatly looking forward to and awaiting the works of this famous composer. I beg you, if it is possible for you, not to neglect this great opportunity, and awaiting a prompt reply from you, because Monsieur Tartini is very busy, and the road from Rovereto to Amsterdam is very long, I submit to your wishes and remain at your complete disposal. 49. The price established in Rome for each book is of three filippi . But I will give out my portion for just two filippi each: wanting no more than this, if not (when possible) an additional sum for the cost of transport, which shall be roughly one lira more per book. But this is a particular wish of mine, and were it impossible to carry out, so be it, I shall be content with two filippi per book. Now, if Your Most Illustrious Lordship could, in those areas, aid me with the sale of a dozen books, I should consider it a very special favour, and such that I shall try in every way (as far as I can) to show my obligation and gratitude with facts, consisting not of printed music, but of my own particular and exclusive music. I beg Your Most Illustrious Lordship for a prompt reply, while conveying to you my deepest regards, I remain Your Most Illustrious Lordship’s
