299 LETTERS proceeded before it could be well thought out. If the sequin causes too much anxiety, may it be removed from the bag and placed in a pouch, or in another place, as its size is very small. The here included paperwork is necessary in order to be presented to the farmer, who is under orders not to give the things to anybody without it. Please forgive me and do me this favour, and submitting to you my most obsequious respects, I remain Your Most Illustrious Lordship’s most humble, devoted and obliged servant Giuseppe Tartini Padua, 17 August 1744 44. Tartini to [Silvestri?] I confess my error, which is to have failed to be at least half as prompt in thanking you as Your Most Illustrious Lordship was in favouring me. Please partially excuse my delay since the day of postage coincided with the day of the feast of the Madonna, half of which I most certainly had to spend carrying out my double duty in church. I now thank Your Most Illustrious Lordship, not sufficiently with my words, but enough with my heart: such is the feeling I have within with regard both to the favour I have received, which is great and full, and to my debt because of this and, most of all, for Your Most Illustrious Lordship’s kindness towards me, I being entirely unworthy of it. It is my habit to appeal to St Anthony, that he may intercede with God to reward my benefactors, when I receive from them the sort of benefit that I cannot repay; especially when there is such a disparity as exists between Your Most Illustrious Lordship and me.
