Martini Signor Paolino has read to me a letter written to him by this Signor Mantovani, in which he is told that he has no further order from his Most Excellent Patron to pay him the monthly sum, with the exception of the whole of July. Your Reverence had written to me that his Excellency kindly assented to leave him here with me for the whole month of August. Therefore, for my organisation and serenity, and for the good of the young man, may Your Reverence take the trouble to ascertain precisely the final and definite intention of His Excellency and announce it to me with such certainty that I should no longer have any doubt one way or the other. This is absolutely necessary, so I strongly beg you for this favour with the utmost haste: for if there is a lack of time and a month less, I shall either double the lessons, or if I do not have time, I shall keep back another student. I sent you some time ago an enclosed letter for Signor Dottor Balbi. I have had no reply to it either from Your Reverence or from the aforementioned. As in the letter I dealt with a most important matter, one in which Your Reverence shall one day, after being informed thereof, find much enjoyment, I beg you now to tell me if the letter was delivered, and if so, the reason why Signor Dottor Balbi is not answering me. I entreat you with regard to the six salamis with garlic, for which you should get the amount, now or at a later date, from Signor Don Angelo, to whom I paid 8 zecchini . Martini As Don Antonio’s absence from Padua has not allowed the order to be given to Don Angelo, his agent, yesterday he assured me that he shall give it to him, so that he will pay Your Reverence the cost of the six salamis with garlic, for the provision of which I beg you again, and with more urgency than ever. Please do me this favour, as I wish to make a gift, and make it eminently of good quality, to a person to whom I owe a lot and who is an enthusiast of things of this type. Do not be scandalised by such forwardness on my part, as I assure you that I know my duty and that this in no way undermines the infinite respect which I have for Your Reverence.
