255 LETTERS convinced the job is done. In the meantime we shall trust in God more than ever, from whom alone one can hope to receive the positive outcome of such a thorny business as this, for as perilous as it may be, one should never lose faith in his providence, which can do everything. I am in good health as regards my body, and even better with regard to the happiness of my soul, because I am learning more and more to regulate myself according to God’s will, and not according to my own. I recommend the same to you, assuring you that there is no other means than this to overcome all the troubles of this world, and to live in entire peace of conscience, against which neither the devil nor any disasters which may come our way can do anything, because if one says with one’s heart “God’s will is thus” all struggles come to an end. More than gladly I would have come there to see our esteemed mother, my sister-in-law, brothers and sisters, and nephews and nieces, but God has not wished for it this year, and I must be content with this, as He wanted, not as I wanted, for there is no answer to that. I would find it fit that you put aside a barrel of that good black moscato for this cavaliere , for the time when we see something important in our favour happening; and if you still think a little about me, if this were not too much trouble for you, I confess the truth to you that I too would gladly enjoy a little thereof here in Padua. I ask you for it, though without causing any trouble, as I do not want it at all costs. In the meantime I ask that you heed what we spoke of so much in Venice, that is to say God’s grace, because this is the only anchor that will prevent us from drowning, and outside it there is no remedy whatsoever. You already clearly see that above our household and above our interests stands God’s hand, which, of absolute will, wants to regulate them in His own way, so one must stay with Him right to the end; and do not doubt that we are dealing with a good master, for however afflicted we may be, the good that comes from Him is always greater than the miseries and the crosses that weigh us down. A dear embrace to everybody in the household and to our kin. God knows with what kind of heart I would stay with you for a few days, but it is not the right time, therefore we must wait for it at a more proper, and maybe happier, occasion. You see dear brother, that the good that comes from God comes when He sees fit, and never when we want it, so in this again we must submit ourselves to Him. I still wait for it both for myself and for all of you, but I see that it depends more on God than on our will, and shall never come about until the time He shall wish it; but it shall come, have no doubt about it. And in the meantime take heart, and let us both trust in our good Lord, whom I already see does all for our good. In the meantime, while giving you the warmest embrace and greeting you all on behalf of my wife and kissing the hands of our esteemed mother, I remain, your most affectionate brother Giuseppe Tartini
