Giuseppe Tartini - Lettere e documenti / Pisma in dokumenti / Letters and Documents - Volume / Knjiga / Volume I

81 INTRODUCTION Letter I.017.008+, on the other hand, was catalogued without precise indications of date and place: Padua?, 1737-1738?”. After reading a letter to Martini dated 9 May 1738, today held at the Accademia Filarmonica of Bologna, 73 I believe I can propose an identification of that missing letter. As specified in the catalogue cards, in the years 1870-1871 certain letters were giv- en by Gaspari to the collector Egidio Succi in exchange for others. The Gaspari-Succi correspondence held in Bologna consists of three letters and a list of the material ex- changed. 74 The list, entitled “Cambio col Sig[or]r Dottor Egidio Fran[ces]co Succi di lettere autografe di celebri maestri” provides references to three Tartini letters: Dare Tartini, tom o 20, num er i 8-20, anni…[sic] #2 [...] Tartini, tomo 20, num er o 25, an no 1741...1 In this list, dated 10 January 1870, Gaspari uses the old numbering of the tomes, that dating back to Martini. In fact Tome 20 (now Tome I.017) contains most of Tartini’s letters. 75 If the internal order of the tomes has remained, as I believe, almost intact, the letters he refers to include 017.008+ (now at the Accademia Filarmonica) and 017.025+ (now at Harvard). With regard to the letter now at Harvard, the indication of the year 1741 further confirms this hypothesis. For the third letter, identified by the number 20, there is no correspondence in the catalogue and the lack of details makes identification arduous. If we observe the progressive numbering of the online call numbers, we note that the position I.017.020 does not exist (it jumps from I.017.019 to I.017.021). This anomaly confirms that the internal order of the tomes and the consequent correspon- dences was retained. Further tools to examine the details of the exchanges between Gaspari and Succi in depth are the two Succi catalogues published in the years 1862 and 1888. A letter from Tartini (with neither year nor description) is catalogued by Succi in 1862 76 and subse- quently in 1888, 77 where it is described as follows: Tartini Giuseppe Signed autograph Letter, Padua 21 April 1741, to Padre Martini. He en- trusts him with various purchases of no importance. Rare and valuable autograph. Letter I.017.023+ had therefore been transferred to Succi before 1870. 73 9 May 1738. Tartini to Martini. 74 I-Bc, Ep. Gaspari-Succi.1-4. 75 Gaspari, 1890: p. 151-152. 76 Succi, 1762: p. 84. 77 Succi, 1888: p. 169.
